How league tables work: points, tiebreakers and promotion

A football league table ranks teams by points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a defeat. When teams are level on points, each league uses its own tiebreakers: the Premier League and the Bundesliga go to goal difference first, while LaLiga and Serie A look at head-to-head results first. At the end of the season the top teams win the title and European places, and the bottom teams are relegated to the division below.

How points work: 3, 1, 0

Every team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. In a 20-team league that's 38 matches each.

ResultPoints
Win3
Draw1
Defeat0

The three-points-for-a-win system has been standard worldwide since the mid-1990s. It was designed to reward attacking football: two draws (2 points) are worth less than one win and one defeat (3 points).

Worked exampleWhy wins matter more than draws

Team A: 10 draws, 0 wins → 10 × 1 = 10 points
Team B: 3 wins, 7 defeats → 3 × 3 = 9 points
Team C: 4 wins, 6 defeats → 4 × 3 = 12 points
Four wins beat ten draws, even with six defeats.

Early in the season, look at points per game rather than raw points, because teams may have played a different number of matches. A team on 20 points from 9 games (2.22 per game) is doing better than a team on 21 from 11 (1.91).

Tiebreakers: goal difference vs head-to-head

When teams finish level on points, leagues split them in different ways. This is where many fans get caught out.

League1st tiebreaker2nd3rd
Premier LeagueGoal differenceGoals scoredHead-to-head record
BundesligaGoal differenceGoals scoredHead-to-head record
LaLigaHead-to-head pointsHead-to-head goal differenceOverall goal difference
Serie AHead-to-head pointsHead-to-head goal differenceOverall goal difference

Two special cases:

  • Premier League: if teams are still level after all criteria and it affects the title, relegation or qualification for another competition, they play a play-off match.
  • Serie A: since 2022/23, a tie on points for first place or for the last relegation place isn't decided by head-to-head but by a play-off. Head-to-head still decides other positions and who hosts the play-off.

When three or more teams are level in a head-to-head league, a mini-table is made from only the matches between those teams.

Worked exampleThe same tie, two different winners

Two teams finish on 70 points.
Team A: goal difference +30. Team B: goal difference +28.
Their meetings: B won 2-1 at home, and the away match ended 1-1.
Goal-difference league (Premier League rules): A has the better GD → A finishes higher.
Head-to-head league (LaLiga rules): B has 4 points from the two meetings, A has 1 → B finishes higher.

Promotion and relegation

Most European leagues are part of a pyramid: the worst teams in each division go down (relegation) and the best teams in the division below come up (promotion). It's what makes the bottom of the table as tense as the top.

Premier LeagueBottom 3Top 2 of the Championship + a play-off winner (3rd–6th)
LaLigaBottom 3Top 2 of Segunda División + a play-off winner (3rd–6th)

BundesligaBottom 2; 16th plays a two-legged play-offTop 2 of the 2. Bundesliga; 3rd plays the 16th-placed Bundesliga club

Play-offs

Play-offs are short knockout competitions for the last promotion place. In England, the Championship teams finishing 3rd to 6th play two-legged semi-finals and a one-off final at Wembley, often called the most valuable single match in football because of the money promotion brings. Play-off ties can go to extra time and penalties.

European places

The top of each table also decides who plays in Europe the next season: the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League. How many places each country gets depends on its UEFA coefficient, a ranking based on its clubs' results in Europe over the previous five seasons. Domestic cup winners usually get a Europa League place, and if a cup winner has already qualified through the league, the place passes to the next team in the table.

Since 2024/25, the two countries whose clubs performed best in Europe the previous season get one extra Champions League place each, so the number of places for a league can change from year to year. Check the competition's current rules before assuming "top four". The Champions League format guide explains what happens once a club gets there.

What tables tell you (and what they don't)

Tables are a great summary of results, but they hide how those results came about. A team can be high in the table after a run of narrow wins and lucky goals, or low after a run of unlucky defeats. That's why analysts look beyond points at goal difference, home and away form and expected goals; see xG and football stats.

For betting, the table also tells you about motivation: a team fighting relegation or chasing a European place in the last weeks of the season may play differently from one with nothing left to play for. That matters for match result bets (see 1X2 betting) and goals markets. Our stats and trends pages show home and away records, scoring and conceding rates for every league.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you get for a win in football?

Three. A draw gives one point to each team and a defeat gives none. This system has been standard across world football since the mid-1990s.

What happens if two teams have the same points?

It depends on the league. In the Premier League and the Bundesliga, goal difference decides first, then goals scored. In LaLiga and Serie A, the head-to-head results between the tied teams decide first.

What does GD mean in a league table?

GD is goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded. A team that has scored 50 and conceded 30 has a GD of +20. In many leagues it's the first tiebreaker when teams are level on points.

How many teams get relegated from the Premier League?

Three. The bottom three clubs go down to the Championship and are replaced by the top two Championship clubs and the winner of the Championship play-offs.

How do teams qualify for the Champions League?

Mainly through their league position. The number of places depends on the country's UEFA coefficient, and since 2024/25 the two best-performing countries in the previous European season get one extra place each. The Champions League and Europa League winners also qualify.
