Bayern 2-2 Arsenal: Rice rescues a point in Munich, Saka limps off
Eze and Rice scored, Davies and a Kane penalty answered. Arsenal stay unbeaten in the Champions League, but Saka's early quad injury is the real worry.
Arsenal left the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night with a 2-2 draw against
Bayern Munich in matchday 3 of the Champions League league phase. Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice scored for the visitors, while Alphonso Davies and a Harry Kane penalty had Bayern ahead until eight minutes from time. Full stats and line-ups are on the Bayern Munich vs Arsenal match page.
How the goals came
- 25' — Eze (0-1). Eze, on as a very early substitute, finished the move. The flag initially went up for offside, but a VAR check found him onside.
- 35' — Davies (1-1). Kane dropped deep and played a through ball from around the centre circle; Davies ran on to it and levelled.
- 61' — Kane, penalty (2-1). Kane's shot struck Jurrien Timber's arm and the spot kick followed. Kane converted it.
- 82' — Rice (2-2). A neat passing move involving Noni Madueke ended with Viktor Gyökeres teeing up Rice, who drove into the box and equalised.
Late on, Manuel Neuer tipped over a long-range effort from Timber, and the game finished level.
The moment that mattered most
The biggest moment for Arsenal came long before any of the goals. Bukayo Saka went off in the 10th minute with a quad problem, and Eze replaced him. That changed the shape of Arsenal's attack, with Madueke moving across to the right. Mikel Arteta said afterwards that the medical staff were concerned. No timescale has been given, so Saka is a doubt for the weekend.
Arsenal were already without the injured Christos Tzolis. Bayern were without the suspended Michael Olise.
What it means in the table
The draw leaves Arsenal on 7 points from three games (two wins, one draw) and still unbeaten in this season's competition. They are seventh in the 36-team league phase. Bayern have 5 points (one win, two draws) after their 3-3 draw with Viking on matchday 2, so they sit outside the top eight for now.
Arsenal had more of the ball over the 90 minutes. Bayern's best spells came from Kane dropping deep to link play, as he did for the Davies goal. Kane now has 16 goals against Arsenal across his career, most of them from his years at Tottenham.
Next up
Arsenal go straight back to the Premier League with a home game against Everton on Saturday (see the Arsenal team page for fixtures). They visit Liverpool on 1 November. Bayern's league-phase run continues with five rounds left. The Champions League hub has the full standings.
