| Outcome | Win part | Place part | Return | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wins | 45.00 | 13.00 | 58.00 | 48.00 |
| Places 2nd–3rd | 0.00 | 13.00 | 13.00 | 3.00 |
| Unplaced | 0.00 | 0.00 | 0.00 | -10.00 |
Place part = 1/5 of the odds: 2.60 decimal (8/5).
How each-way bets are settled
An each-way bet is two equal bets. The win part is settled at the full odds; the place part at a fraction of them: place odds = 1 + (decimal odds − 1) × terms.
Worked example
£5 each-way (£10 total) at 8/1, 1/5 the odds, 3 places. Place odds = 8/5 = 2.60.
- Wins: win part £5 × 9.00 = £45, place part £5 × 2.60 = £13 → return £58, profit £48.
- Finishes 2nd or 3rd: place part £13 only → profit £3.
- Unplaced: both parts lose → −£10.
Rule 4
With a 10p Rule 4, the winnings — not the stakes — shrink by 10%: the win part pays £5 + £40 × 0.90 = £41 and the place part £5 + £8 × 0.90 = £12.20.
Each-way terms are most common in horse racing, golf and outright football markets (top scorer, league winner). Always check the terms on your bet slip: they decide how much the place part pays.
FAQ
What is an each-way bet?
Two bets of the same stake: one on your selection to win and one on it to place (finish in the paid places). A £5 each-way bet costs £10. If it wins, both parts pay; if it only places, the place part pays and the win part loses.
How are each-way place odds calculated?
The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, set by the bookmaker’s each-way terms: 1/4 or 1/5 are the most common. At 8/1 with 1/5 terms the place odds are 8/1 ÷ 5 = 8/5 (2.60 decimal).
What do 1/4 odds, 3 places mean?
The place part pays a quarter of the win odds if the selection finishes 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Terms and the number of places depend on the race or event and are shown on the bet slip before you bet.
What is Rule 4?
A deduction from winnings when a runner is withdrawn after the market has formed, because the field became easier. It is quoted in pence in the pound (e.g. 15p) and applies to the winnings of both parts of an each-way bet; your stake is returned in full.
Can an each-way bet lose money even if it places?
Yes. If the place odds are below evens (e.g. 3/1 at 1/5 = 3/5), a placed selection returns less than the total each-way stake, because the win part is lost. The table in the calculator shows the profit for each outcome.
